A key issue in recent theoretical discussions (Duncum, 2002; Freedman, 2003; Boyd, et.al., 2007; Parks, 2004; Sweeny, 2006) in the field of art education concerns the inclusion of visual culture---the visual landscape of marketing imagery, artistic expression, visual symbols and social commentary---into the art curriculum. Underlying many arguments (Duncum, 2002; Freedman, 2003; Mirzoeff, 1998) is acknowledgement that visual culture has a profound impact on how students experience their world and often defines relationships with their surroundings; this includes the role that technology and mass media play in the teaching, creation and appreciation of art. Since theorists, however, cannot experience visual culture in the same way as their students this research investigates the teenage perspective. A series of interviews examine students' attitudes and experiences regarding visual culture as it relates to art, aesthetics, and the breakdown of traditional artist/audience boundaries that result from technological developments.
