Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2006.
Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur are two philosophers whose impact has been profound in the hermeneutics of recent Christian theology. My thesis is that the investigation of the concrete use of philosophical theories of hermeneutics shows how these philosophical theories are usually already entwined within value judgments that express religious or theological insights and intuitions. The dissertation studies how the influences of the Lutheran faith tradition upon Gadamer and the Reformed faith tradition upon Ricoeur are visible in their philosophical hermeneutics. It then shows how the three Catholic theologians, Edward Schillebeeckx, Claude Geffre and Francis Schussler Fiorenza, have used these philosophical insights but have also critiqued them in light of their own Catholic understandings of the Christian faith traditions. The thesis argues that Gadamer's and Ricoeur's hermeneutics cannot be simply applied within Christian and especially Catholic theology without a theological integration which brings together the fundamental religious insights of each Christian tradition which continually shape the interpretative process itself.
