Thesis (M.A.Sc.)--The University of Regina (Canada), 2009.
Greenhouses located in extreme climates such as the Canadian prairies only function during warmer months of the year to avoid extreme cold conditions. Improving sustainable production of greenhouse produce with optimal growing conditions in the Canadian Prairies is a challenge. The increasing cost in energy and the tremendous amount of heat loss from poor greenhouse structures restricts the running of a sustainable greenhouse in the prairies.

The idea proposed in this thesis is a Fuzzy Logic Control System that is designed for a subterranean or subsurface greenhouse. Using Fuzzy Intelligent Control, parameters such as interior and exterior temperatures, interior and exterior humidity, root temperature, natural light, day-length, ambient carbon dioxide concentration, pH level, root oxygen concentration, and electric conductivity are monitored and can be modified to help maintain ideal conditions required for plant growth. A subterranean (underground) environment is an ideal location, as it is not affected by extreme weather conditions. Geothermal heat from the surrounding earth along with the Fuzzy Intelligent Control System helps maintain an ideal environment that favours efficient growing conditions.
