Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2011.
The purpose of this project was to develop an adapted camping and hiking curriculum that teaches outdoor adventure transferable skills to positively influence life skills for adult transition students in South Orange County, California. Outdoor adventure transferable skills such as: achieving self-concepts, critical thinking, communication, empowerment, independence, respect, social integration, and trust are similar to those that adult transition students are required to learn and are necessary to live as independently as possible, in order to reach their full potential as adults. Adults with disabilities desire the same things as adults without disabilities and recent trends show that "emerging adults" (ages 16-22) desire to participate in outdoor adventure. This project reveals the lack of adapted outdoor adventure programs currently available in South Orange County. Lastly, this project presents other service providers with an evaluation for outdoor adventure skills that are transferable to life skills for adults with disabilities.
