Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2010.
Adolescent suicide is a growing phenomenon that is not adequately addressed in graduate education. Students and clinicians who experience a patient suicide respond negatively which in turn affects perceived competence. As a result, education in adolescent suicide is warranted. Therefore, this dissertation is a graduate level course on adolescent suicide. It is a complete and comprehensive course constructed in the form of a teacher's manual. The course aims to increase knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding adolescent suicide. The primary focus is on assessment, intervention, and postvention. The course also covers general statistics, theory, risk and protective factors, prevention, history, cultural factors, legal issues, and self-care. The manual includes a syllabus, chapter objectives, supplemental materials, discussion questions, assignments and required readings, and optional readings for enhanced learning as well as additional resources on the topic. This course will adequately prepare a clinician to work competently with suicidal adolescents and suicide survivors.
