Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northcentral University, 2011.
When compared to the general population, college students face a higher risk for depression. Specifically, researchers estimate as many as thirty-one percent of all college students report being depressed. How spirituality and religion correlate with depression is under-researched in college students. Religion and spirituality may be seen as coping skills, which mitigate stressors, provide a greater sense of well-being, and thus decrease the overall risk for depression. In particular, no research to date distinguishes between religious distress and spiritual well-being in relation to depression. The purpose of this quantitative correlational survey research is to investigate the relationship between spiritual well-being, religious distress, and depression in 139 male and female freshmen college students, between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine, enrolled at a Christian liberal arts university in the state of Kentucky. In this study, students were administered the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Brief Religious/Spiritual Coping Scale (Brief RCOPE), and a demographic questionnaire. As predicted, a significant negative partial correlation between SWBS and BDI scores was found, r(103) = -.36, p < .01, along with a significant positive partial correlation between the Brief RCOPE Negative Religious/Spiritual Coping scale and BDI scores, r(103) = .37, p < .01. Finally, as predicted a significant negative correlation between the SWBS and the Brief RCOPE was found, r(103) = -.35, p < .01. Based on Cohen's guidelines, all three correlations correspond to moderate effect sizes.

This study suggests that college freshmen who experience lower levels of spiritual well-being or higher levels of religious distress are more likely to experience depressive symptoms. In addition, the negative relationship between the SWBS and the Brief RCOPE suggests that these two questionnaires may be measuring the same underlying construct. Spiritual issues and depressive symptoms among college freshmen may be discussed and addressed as appropriate by campus counselors and faculty. Future studies need to utilize longitudinal research to investigate how spirituality and religious distress impact college student's mental well-being over time.
