Thesis (M.S.)--The William Paterson University of New Jersey, 2009.
This study examined parental attitudes towards speech and language assessment. It was hypothesized there would be two types of parents: those who view the speech language pathologist (SLP) as the expert and those who want to collaborate and participate in the assessment process. A survey was developed to parental attitudes toward the assessment process. The survey was distributed to parents whose children were receiving services in a private practice, university clinic or public school. Results revealed there were three types of parents: those that view the SLP as the expert, those who want to collaborate and participate with the SLP and those who view assessment as a medical process. The parents who viewed the SLP as the expert primarily had children who were receiving services in a public school. These parents were also less educated. The parents who wanted to collaborate had children who were receiving services from a university clinic or private practice. These parents tended to be college-educated.
