No-till (NT), an extreme form of conservation tillage, has been promoted as the optimal management practice to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks when compared to conventional tillage (CT). This study was conducted to determine if the conversion to NT sequesters carbon within the farm field setting comparing sampling depth and soil morphology between NT and conventional tillage (CT) methods; in addition SOC, soil color, and soil texture relationships were explored. The effects of tillage on SOC stocks were investigated in Ogle County, Illinois between neighboring NT and CT fields. The SOC stocks in 0 to 10 cm were significantly greater in NT in two out of three sites, 0 to 20 cm one out of three, 0 to 30 cm one out of three, and 0 to 40 cm one out of three. Overall total carbon sequestration between the three sites for 0 to 30 cm was -0.4, 0.11, and 2.37 Mg ha-1 yr-1. From 0 to 50 cm SOC sequestered was 0.7, 0.74, and 2.68 Mg ha-1 yr-1. SOC and color relationships were determined for the soil surface of all sites. SOC showed a strong relationship with all three soil color measurements, but particularly moist soil colors (Munsell value moist r2 = 0.85, Munsell chroma moist r 2 = 0.90, and percent reflectance moist r2 = 0.85). SOC and geometric mean had a weak and very weak negative correlation amongst all samples and upper 10 cm, respectively. Drawing concrete conclusions from experiments such as this for the means of sequestering carbon needs to be tempered with the understanding of the limitations of the sampling of such a complex system.
