Over the past decade, there has been a surge in interest in local and organic food in Canada. This study uses a weekly farmers market in Toronto, Canada as a focal point for a qualitative investigation into the meaning farmers' market shoppers attach to their local and organic food purchase. Through interviews, participant observation and theoretical analysis, I use the Extended Case Study Method (as described by Michael Burawoy) to investigate if, how and when the purchase of local and organic food is a form of political participation. Using a conceptual framework for the identification of political consumerism that makes a distinction between public and private motivations, I argue that consumers with public motivations for their purchases are often engaged in a meaningful and counter-hegemonic form of political participation, but that this type of participation is inconsistent, context-dependent and generally detached from traditional, collective forms of political activism.
