Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2009.
In the year 2000, the nation of Vietnam supplanted Colombia as the second largest producer of coffee in the world. Vietnam reached this position after only twenty five years as a commercial coffee producer. In contrast, the traditional three top producers, Brazil, Colombia, and Indonesia, have been in the industry for over a century. This expansion of supply without a notable increase in demand is one of the key reasons for the coffee price crisis of 2001/2002, an episode of extreme low prices which had adverse effects on smallholder coffee farmers around the world.

Using three key dimensions of the Global Commodity Chain framework (input-output structure, territoriality, governance structure), this thesis investigates the historical and contemporary makeup of the global coffee industry and the history of coffee production in Vietnam in order to discern the impetus for Vietnam's entry into this industry. In addition, the social, political, and environmental consequences of such a drastic increase in coffee cultivation are considered.

What this thesis finds is that in spite of Vietnam's economic gains from coffee, the country has been afflicted by a myriad of resultant problems. The displacement and marginalization of indigenous peoples leading toward social tensions, a tremendous Ioss in forest cover and biodiversity, and unsustainable demands on regional water resources are the most prominent of these issues. Undeterred by these issues, Vietnam remains second only to Brazil in its coffee cultivation.
