Material boundary reconstruction or material interface reconstruction (MIR) is the problem of reconstructing an interface between regions of materials over a given mesh. Each grid cell has associated volume fractions which are the material percentages present in the given cells. Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) methods make use of these volume fractions to estimate the interface in the mesh. VOF methods naturally lend themselves to conservation of mass of each fluid, do not require previous state knowledge to make changes in global topology of the front, and the work required to update the front location is localized. This paper explores some key VOF methods which cover a wide range of approaches to the problem of MIR. Depending on the desired requirements of the interface reconstruction, for example interface continuity or time efficiency, some methods may be better suited than others.
