Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northcentral University, 2010.
The impact of student behavior on the school culture from the teachers' perceptive was determined in this study. Through an awareness of the impact that student behavior has on the school culture, school administrators can alter the negative effects and implement positive change. The participants included 25 randomly chosen teachers from within the school, and of the 25 participants 15 were selected to participate in 1 of the 2 focus group interview sessions. The study was conducted by utilizing a mixed methodology approach. The quantitative component of the study included 2 surveys and the qualitative component was addressed through 2 focus group interviews. The Organization Culture Profile Generator and The School as a Caring Community Profile-II surveys were used to collect numerical data regarding the school culture and the teacher's perception of student behavior. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data collected from the surveys. The transcripts from the focus group interview sessions were synthesized to ascertain a clear understanding of the environment. The results indicated that student behavior has a direct impact on the school culture from the teachers' perspective. Interview participants noted that the behavior of students in this school was not consistently and fairly managed by the school officials, which negatively impacted the school culture. It is recommended that this school (a) establish discipline policies and consistently apply school rules to all students, (b) develop shared leadership and professional learning communities, and (c) form purposeful relationships to establish a shared vision and shared values. Recommendations for further research include the replication of the study in other environments by investigating the perspectives of teachers throughout the urban and suburban areas, or a comparison of the impact of student behavior on the school culture in urban and suburban areas.
