Edenton Street United Methodist Church is a growing downtown church in Raleigh, North Carolina. As it grows, there are many challenges including nurturing spiritual growth. One issue is the need to slow down and experience God. It has been said that our hearts are restless and wandering and can only find their rest in God. This project aimed to help people take the time to find rest in a relationship with God---spiritual formation for the twenty-first century.

520 $a The Lay Advisory Team decided that a short-term course that taught and practiced various spiritual disciplines would be a good way to help people slow down and bridge together traditional practices with today's contemporary lives. Would a course of this magnitude be an effective way to help people slow down and experience God? Are spiritual disciplines relevant in our busy world?
520 $a The project was framed using the main tenets of the Wesley Quadrilateral---Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. By using these four guides, with Scripture anchoring the process, the project was able to bridge older concepts with new ideas and practices. Marie McCarthy provides theological conversation around this idea as she discusses spirituality in a postmodern world. Certain measuring tools including written evaluations, interviews and surveys were used to collect data that relates to the effectiveness of the course and the transformational potential that course might yield.
520 $a The end result illustrated that a short-term course could help busy Christians in today's world slow down and experience God. The process further showed that spiritual disciplines are effective to help people spend time with God and experience transformation. In specific, there was great power and transformation in the corporate practice of various spiritual disciplines. Edenton Street found old and new ways to slow down and walk with God in the busyness of our world and our hope is that others can utilize this information to help people find rest for their restless hearts.
