The purpose of this research was to develop an understanding of an ethic of care as it is embraced and practiced in an educational setting. Using narrative non-fiction story method, the principal and five teachers in one selected elementary school were interviewed. Because of their academic record, the school has been rated repeatedly by the Texas Education Agency as "Exemplary" or "Recognized". The school enrollment reflects the predominately African American, middle- to low-income neighborhood.

The study was designed to identify the characteristics of this particular school culture relative to care, the leadership practices that exemplify an ethic of care, and the power structure of the school as evidence of caring power. Common themes emerged as critical elements of the life at Frances Burtyn Elementary and became the framework for this narrative. These themes were (1) continuity of purpose, people, and place, (2) pursuit of academic excellence, and (3) exploration of gifts and talents.
