This dissertation examines the way Japanese people of young age define three positive emotion terms (i.e., ureshii, tanoshii, and yorokobu) via use of language in everyday conversations rather than through literary languages and dictionary definitions. The personal meanings of these emotion terms are considered to vary based on context and construed while an individual is in conversation with another. This is an interview study based on a partnership model (Bibace, 1999), in which the research participants are regarded as partner to the researcher. The study illustrates the coexistence of individualistic and collectivistic concerns in the personal meaning of Japanese positive emotion words, and proposes a model for the process by which personal meanings are construed between two conversational partners.
