Petroleum is finite, non-renewable, unevenly concentrated in the political unstable countries, and may contribute to climate change. General lack of consensus strategy to implement clean renewable energy sources resulted in transition challenges and the need for selected study. The objective of the study was to explore potential practices of renewable energy for the U.S. automobile industry. Twelve participants with diverse backgrounds and knowledge in renewable energy participated in a three-round online, mixed-method Delphi study. The first round consisted of qualitative open-ended questions and data analysis. The second and third rounds consisted of closed-ended questions and quantitative data analysis. Study results offered recommendations to the federal agencies, energy producers, and consumers regarding strategy to transition to environmentally responsible and clean renewable energy. The U.S. Federal Government should promote and assist the American private sectors in securing the clean renewable energy market through grants, tax incentives, and legislations while taking calculated and measurable environmental risks of domestic non-renewable energy explorations to reduce national security threats from foreign oil imports. The U.S. automakers should produce electric combustion engine hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid Electric, and Pure Plug-in Electric vehicles that will accommodate the consumers' demands and features. The energy companies should take advantage of the federal government's renewable energy programs to new develop smart grid electric infrastructure while improving the electric storage technology in battery.
