Nonprofit theatres face grave challenges to sustainability, as shown by reports of failing organizations across the United States. Decreased attendance indicates a disconnection between producers and consumers of theatre, fueled by major societal shifts in technology, education, demographics, policy, and economics. Despite this bleak landscape, some people still choose to attend. Understanding their expectations and experience can help theatres and artists reconnect with their necessary partner in any performance---the audience. Reviewing theatre studies and participation literature suggests a gap in the understanding of audience members' experiences, raising questions about why people go, whether their experience matches their expectations, and how the alignment between theatres' and audiences' understanding of the audience perspective affects patrons' satisfaction.

By surveying leaders and 1,210 audience members at 12 community-connected theatres in Long Beach, California, this project examined the audiences' expectations, experience, and satisfaction at those theatres. The A-SEAT Scale (Assessing Shared Expectations/Experience, Audience and Theatre) was developed to examine how closely theatres and their audiences are aligned in understanding the audience's experience and relationship with the organization. Both aesthetic quality of production and shared understanding were shown to be factors that affect audience satisfaction, but shared understanding was significantly stronger in predicting satisfaction than was aesthetic quality. At theatres more committed to building audience participation through communication and education strategies, audiences reported higher satisfaction with productions. Finally, the degree to which a theatre's mission statement focuses on the audience's experience of its productions is positively related to audience satisfaction. All findings were moderated by age but overall, they suggest that theatres can increase audience satisfaction in all age groups through targeted strategies that strengthen the connection between theatres and their audience members. These results highlight areas for additional research, such as audience members' perception of aesthetic quality and its role in their satisfaction, as well as how theatres balance the need for innovation and excellence with responsiveness to audience expectations. By examining the connection between theatres and their audiences, this project informs marketing and production choices for theatres, and confirms the value of arts funding that supports audience engagement and development.
