Thesis (Ph.D.)--California Institute of Integral Studies, 2010.
Artists and art collectives in the San Francisco Bay Area are increasingly creating art works that involve community engagement and audience participation, and resemble day-to-day experiences that challenge social structures within an urban context. The terms "art and social practice" and "socially engaged art" relate to art practices that are as varied as the artists that create them. The "social" encompasses both form and content, and in some situations the "social" is a way of working with, or alongside, different communities; at other times it serves as a means for manufacturing the conditions for sociability or aestheticizing services in public or private spaces. Artists reclaim public spaces to inspire new forms of food distribution and find creative solutions to social issues and alternative ways to raise political awareness.

Situated in the context of the Bay Area, this research includes ethnographic data compiled from interviews with artists, curators, and scholars, all of whom are immersed in new ways of theorizing activist practices in order to gain deeper insights into understanding the institutionalization of art and social engagement.
