The art museum served as a source of personal growth, education, and enlightenment while the researcher pursued an early interest in creating and teaching art. Museums present their own assumptions and ideas of social, political, and sexual identity. Thus, they are not innocent shells constructed to house aesthetically pleasing works of art, but rather places where art works are perceived in a particular way. The perceived roles of the museum in society, contemporary art as a reflection of today's living culture, and the cathartic influence of contemporary art exhibits; prompted the researcher to investigate the interrelations of contemporary art museums and societal issues. This study was an exploration of the intention and purpose of three Texas contemporary art museums, through a qualitative inquiry, to examine their roles as activist agents for social change. The inquiry included data collected from personal observations, interviews with museum officials, exhibition descriptions, and visitor surveys.

520 $a The concept of changing social needs is an emergent issue in the formulation and display of museum exhibits and current museum research. The educational role of the museum is a leading constituent in the focus of this study. The related literature provides a platform for the use of contemporary art as a forum through which individual and world perceptions are changed. Specifically, the educational mission of early and present day museums (Caston, 1989; McLean, 1999) and museum learning theories (Pekarik, 2004; McCracken, 2003) provide a foundation for the implementation of contemporary art as an educational instrument. Societal change (MacDonald, 1992; Falk, 2000) presents a view of today's visitor in relation to expectations of contemporary art exhibits, and meaning making in museums (Robins, 2005; Garfield, 1993) explains the importance of using art works as a silent voice for society.
520 $a Data for this study was drawn from an analysis of exhibitions of these museums dating from 2007--2009, and interviews from museum visitors and personnel. The following questions were explored: a) What criteria do museum leaders consider when choosing their exhibitions? b) In what ways does the museum adapt to the changing roles of museums today? c) Do museum leaders see the museum as an activist agent for social change, and if so, in what way? Research from this study revealed that Texas contemporary art museums are acting as agents for change through choices of exhibitions, as well as through attitudes of museum administrators. Texas contemporary art museums seek to educate the viewer and meet societal needs by creating awareness of current local and global issues. Awareness of current issues opens up dialogue and possible action. Texas art museums are meeting the interests of the public by presenting relevant exhibition themes that have the power to instigate societal change. This study is significant to art education, as the emphasis on meaning making in art, as well as respect for activist viewpoints, are consistent with progressive educational approaches. Today's teachers are encouraged to inform students about current global issues. Art teachers use museum exhibits and collections as resources throughout their instruction, and contemporary art exhibits that inspire public action serve as valuable teaching instruments for creating social awareness in today's youth.
