The data collection was carried out on two groups of population. For the analysis of Malay CDMs, Malay students from the International Islamic University of Malaysia participated in a survey-based questionnaire, which consisted of a series of substitutability tests, specifically written to study the acceptability and distribution of Malay CDMs, syntactically, semantically, and pragmatically. In the comparative analysis of Malay and English CDMs, several bilinguals (Malay and English) translated two separate sets of sentences from Malay to English, and vice versa. A morphological analysis of each marker was also done to differentiate markers which show similar meanings. The result of the analysis was then compared to English CDMs.

The results show that Malay has eight CDMs compared with over twenty in English. Malay has a general CDM, tetapi (but), which may be substituted for each of the other MCDMs, thereby indicating that Malay has only one contrastive relationship between discourse segments. In addition, syntactic considerations for Malay CDMs are found to be more restrictive than English CDMs. Results also show five classes of DMs in Malay, with some classes having more than one marker, compared to eight classes in English. The English to Malay translation shows that all Malay CDMs were used. In comparison, only ten English CDMs were used in the Malay to English translation. This shows that the subjects did not distinguish the contrast indicated by the rest of the English CDMs, or they simply were not able to do so. Despite the difference in the number of CDMs in both languages, both translations show a many-to-one correspondence between the CDMs, indicating that there are no exact equivalents between the CDMs of Malay and English.
