Four individuals were chosen to participate in this study based on the job they perform, their use of writing in that job as well as their relationship to this writer; a personal knowledge of the respondents allowed for added depth in understanding and communication. Data collection involved the interviewing of the four professionals, the collection of three writing samples from the past and one which was performed while this writer observed. Analysis of data from the taped interviews and the writing samples was performed and is summarized in a comprehensive chapter for each of the respondents.

Summary of conclusions. (1) Writing is a practical skill at two levels, those who use writing on the job need to know the basic skills of grammar as well as the higher level skills of abstraction. (2) We need to diligently promote better reading and writing skills in high school and college graduates. (3) Individuals need to be involved in experiences of reading and writing from a young age. (4) Individuals need to look upon writing as a process. (5) Writing required in school needs to be student centered. (6) Learning to write is not just important for those in the humanities and liberal arts. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)
