This research addresses how and why the global rice export markets have changed over the period from 1995 to 2008. A shift-share analysis framework is employed to estimate the factors responsible for the shift in the global rice export market shares. These factors are disaggregated into a global demand effect, a geographical structural effect and a performance effect. The performance effect is decomposed into two factors which account for adaptation to the geographical structural effect and a competitiveness effect. The results focus on the growing concentration in the global rice market and explain the underlying causes and effects. Finally, the export performance is analyzed by decomposing the components of the variability in export market share to identify the relative contribution of each of the explanatory factors associated with the geography of rice trade and competitiveness.
