Thesis (M.Sc.)--University of Alberta (Canada), 2009.
The effects of 3 maternal BW profiles [Standard (STD), 10% higher (HIGH), and 10% lower than STD (LOW)], 3 maternal energetic efficiency categories (L-Eff= Low efficient, M-Eff= Medium efficient, H-Eff= High efficient) and 2 maternal egg production categories [Low (L-EP) and High (H-EP)] on egg and offspring broiler traits, residual yolk, broiler growth rate, and meat quality of progeny were studied.

HIGH maternal BW and H-Eff hens produced heavier egg, and chicks. These treatments had limited effect on chick quality and residual yolk in chicks. Breeder BW and maternal efficiency did not affect the growth, carcass yield, and meat quality traits of progeny in a meaningful way. Broilers from L-EP hens were on average 3.2% heavier than broilers from HE hens. This reflects a better growth potential due to genetic merit rather than an egg size or maternal growth potential effect.
