Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2010.
Costa Rica culture is presented to tourists through one-day tours to numerous sites around the country. Tour guides use written narratives, scripted narratives, creative narratives, and anecdotes during the long bus rides and at the tourist destinations to help connect the tourists as a group and to teach about Costa Rican culture. Making use of data collected during ethnographic fieldwork in Costa Rica, this thesis draws on the work of Ochs and Capps (2001), which focuses on the tellership, embeddedness, tellability, and moral stance of narratives. I seek to build on their work by considering the dynamics of a multinational speech community, and examining how narratives are used to frame the representations of the past and current life in Costa Rica.
