Community volunteer organizations face numerous challenges due to their special nature. This study examined ways in which the Gloucester Community Concert Band, a registered non-profit charity organization with a diverse membership, can foster a supportive and sustainable community where members are committed, engaged and aspire to take on leadership roles. Through a series of focus groups and interviews, this study posits that: A sense of belonging fosters engagement; membership in the band is part of work-life balance; relationships within the band set the tone for a successful year; people want to give; and a shared leadership model cultivates commitment and engagement. It also offers 11 recommendations to enrich the members' volunteer experience, strengthen the organizational culture, and cultivate a sustainable organization.
