The primary purpose of this research was to determine neighborhood park users level of moderate and vigorous physical activity (PA), assess types of park activities and to evaluate the quality of park facility safety, condition, and maintenance within neighborhoods stratified by violent crime strata (low, moderate, high) in Phoenix, AZ. A secondary aim was to determine visits per week and the mode and duration of travel to parks. Nine parks were evaluated (3 per violent crime level) with 17-31 observations per park. Park users (N= 210) were selected randomly to complete a participant survey. Most were inactive (43%) or insufficiently active (40.6%) and fewer met PA recommendations for good health (17.1%). The frequency of park activities observed included sedentary behaviors relaxing/hanging out (72.7%); watching children play (66.7%), mobile activities (walking, 83.3%; dog walking 57.1%); playing with children (50%), and sport activities (general sports, 75.0%; soccer, 50.0%). No differences were observed between park strata for the PA levels of park users or the types of activities performed in the parks, p > .05. No differences were observed between the park strata for the park quality scores of safety, maintenance, and equipment condition, p > .05. Most park users visited the parks 1-2 (45%) or 3-4 times per week (47%). While the frequency of 3-4 visits per week was higher in low crime neighborhoods (50.0%), than in high (47.3%), and moderate crime neighborhoods (30.0%), there was no statistical difference between the frequencies of park visits by park strata, p > .05. There was no difference in how park users traveled to the park (drove a vehicle (51.2%), walked (43.9%), p > .05 or the length of time it took to travel to the park (range 7.3-9.5 minutes), p > .05. In conclusion, no differences were observed in park use activities, facility upkeep, mode, and duration of travel to city parks located in Phoenix neighborhoods characterized by the strata of violent crime. Since neighborhood parks provide free and/or low cost opportunities for health enhancing PA behaviors, strategies are needed to encourage residents to visit parks on a regular basis.
