The instruments utilized for this study included a Racial Tolerance Index (a modified version of the Lyons Youth Diversity Acceptance Scale), sociometric mapping that charted interactions, and written observations from each session. The independent samples T-test that tested the change in the groups' scores of the Racial Tolerance Index found that the difference between groups was not statistically significant; however, the observations indicated the treatment group did have a more positive change in their racial tolerance. The outcomes of the sociometric mapping indicated that there were differences in how often each race associated with other races while in the gameroom as opposed to the gymnasium and the observations indicated a similar theme, among others, including: the social games experience had a positive effect on social interaction, and racial intolerance was persistent but improved over the course of the program. Finally, the outcomes of this study indicated that social recreation programs may improve racial tolerance.
