Based on accumulated examples of spiritual works and workers, in media and in life, this study considers "charismagic" cultural production in Ghana. It argues that, in the midst of not-always-verifiable realities and relations of power, and in addition to the promise of a democracy of vision and divine access provided by Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, human agents engage and access longer rooted discourses of power and spiritual action, here called "charismagic." Based on ethnographic field research, the data sources break into three interrelated sets: 1. The products: the media themselves, primarily video films and gospel music videos. Section I is concerned primarily with exploring this data set. Section II involves the following sets. 2. The processes: "behind-the-scenes" experiences during these productions, often involving their own performances and spiritual entanglements, and more standard interview footage with leading media producers and artists. 3. Searching for power(book): continued reflexive involvement in consultations with interlocutors from Pentecostal prophet(esse)s to "traditional priests," concerning the state of stolen production equipment and the resultant battles on the spiritual and physical planes.

Based on accumulated examples of spiritual works and workers, in media and in life, this study considers "charismagic" cultural production in Ghana. It argues that, in the midst of not-always-verifiable realities and relations of power, and in addition to the promise of a democracy of vision and divine access provided by Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, human agents engage and access longer rooted discourses of power and spiritual action, here called "charismagic." Taken together, these three sets of data help navigate, as levels of analysis, between the map and the terrain, between the media themselves and everyday realities. Herein lies the analytical power of the project. It does not just involve an analysis of media, and does not just observe their processes of production, but the research also connects, in a participatory and reflexive manner, to individuals' experience with these same forces beyond their manifestations in media. Through these various cultural productions, then, the author reflexively engages the mediated representations and realities of socio-spiritual conflict, or "witchcraft," in Ghana. By ethnographically rooting discourses on "witchcraft" in their social milieu, the project can illuminate broader and related dynamics of social and semiotic instability, globalizing capitalism, and religious movements such as Pentecostal/Charismatic Christianity. This dissertation, as a hypermediated form, combines both "storied implicitness" and explicit analysis, to show and to tell, how there are blurred lines of distinctions between Christian and non-Christian expressions; between stories and socio-spiritual realities; and between "religion" and other socio-political forms.
