Surprisingly however, this educational endeavor has not easily filtered down to the educational level of the allied health practitioners, which is particularly worrisome since patient contact time is far greater in many scenarios with these providers of medical services.

520 $a This study addresses the issue of film being employed as the educational vehicle to deliver empathy training for undergraduates in the allied health majors. The Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale (BEES) is used to measure empathy of participating students (n=124) from three different majors: nursing, radiography, and respiratory therapy. The nursing major was divided into two test groups; one group was students just starting the program, and the other students were graduating the semester of the research. Each participant completed a BEES instrument on three separate occasions. Data was thus collected prior to the film screening, immediately after the film, and lastly followed by a post-viewing two-month evaluation.
520 $a Demographic data was collected from the test population regarding their gender, age (by range), and educational level. Statistical analysis provided comparisons between the different majors, as well as selected demographics. Special focus was given to the gain or loss of measured empathy exhibited in the pre-viewing to the first post-viewing evaluations, the first post-viewing to the second post-viewing evaluations and the previewing to the second post-viewing evaluations in an attempt to quantify the response to the film compared to the baseline, measure the level of fading, and to determine if the faded level of empathy returned to the pre-viewing baseline. Statistical analysis was also performed on the two nursing populations to determine their respective levels of measured empathy for comparison purposes.
520 $a There was a significant improvement in measured empathy after the test populations viewed the film (Wit), which was also present but to a lesser degree at the two-month interval. Allied health students measured empathy remained above their baseline values. Film can be a cost efficient means of providing empathy training in allied health curricula that have little room for entire courses in medical humanities.
