The population of children with chronic illness has increased significantly in recent years as more children survive to adulthood because of advanced medicine and preventive health measures. The concept of crisis has not often been considered nor investigated in a chronic illness situation. When crisis has been considered, it has usually been thought of as the negative aspects of the event. However, childhood chronic illness has been considered as a crisis for a family, and a crisis (XXX) is not only a danger (XXX, negative aspect) but an opportunity (XXX, positive aspect). To apply this concept to different situations and to explore the concept with families can help clinicians to empower families and patients. Brain tumor, the chronic illness examined in this study, is the second leading childhood cancer which peak incident age is school age. The overall goal of this study is to develop a better understanding of experiences of the family having a school-aged child with a brain tumor in Taiwan. Family research with a multiple case study design was used to investigate experiences of families having a school-age child with a brain tumor. The family as a case was the unit of analysis in this study. Four individual family case reports were presented and a cross case comparison was made in order to present the uniqueness and similarity of these families. Families' positive and negative experiences, perceptions of the illness, changes, crisis, and family context (the extended family, family functioning, and social support) were explored in this study. Some nursing implications for research, practice and education were provided.
