Ecoregion conservation has become an increasingly popular means to achieve long-term biodiversity conservation. Practitioners worldwide are broadening both the spatial and temporal scales at which they conduct conservation action---shifting from species-centered to ecosystem-based approaches; planning over longer time frames; and protecting larger areas of land, water, and related ecological processes.

However, few researchers have examined the impacts of ecoregion conservation on human communities, particularly those in high-priority areas. Yet it has repeatedly been demonstrated that the understanding and active involvement of local communities represent critical components in successful conservation initiatives. Gaining a better understanding of how and why people develop a place connection at a scale between the local and the global has implications for the design, implementation, and outcomes of large-scale conservation. Therefore, in light of the proliferation of ecoregion conservation, this study examined underpinnings for developing effective strategies that involve people in conservation, particularly through the lens of residents' sense of place.

Using three ecologically, geographically, and culturally diverse case studies---the Galapagos Islands, the Klamath-Siskiyou, and the Chesapeake Bay---the research examined whether the ecoregional scale is one at which residents develop a sense of place. In addition, the research probed what an ecoregional-scale sense of place means with regard to people's propensity to take action to address environmentally related concerns.

The study builds on theories related to place, community, environmental values, environmental education, and environmental behavior, grounded in the context of ecoregion conservation. Qualitative and quantitative data gathered through interviews, surveys, and mapping exercises illuminated the biophysical, psychological, sociocultural, and political-economic dimensions of sense of place that motivated place connections and related behaviors of residents in each of the research sites.

By exploring the intersection of place, scale, and behavior, the study provides insight into whether and how a sense of place develops at an intermediary scale. The findings become increasingly important as conservation organizations and agencies continue to implement initiatives at an ecoregional scale with tremendous impact for environmental policy, biodiversity conservation, and human communities, now and for years to come.
