Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton University, 2011.
This dissertation is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus from 2003 until 2005. It is located just following the opening of the Green Line border that has divided the Greek and Turkish Cypriot populations of the island for more than thirty years. It follows the lives and voices of Turkish and Greek Cypriots as they negotiate the conflict that exists between them, and rediscover living together once again. Through these voices, it seeks to evoke a feeling of the conflict in day to day life, always entangled, crisscrossing, in memories, histories, and narratives of the past and present.

The dissertation begins by giving a basic historical background to what has been labeled "the Cyprus Problem," attempting to highlight its intricacies and points of contention. It then focuses on the unique theoretical problems and concerns associated with the study of conflict. The theory of how the conflict is made, also gives us insight into how to try and understand it, and how it might be resolved. As the dissertation progresses, the voices of the people of Cyprus are evoked more and more. In doing so, I explore how these construct the conflict in day to day life and how alternative narratives are changing it. Always these voices are represented in dialogue, and each chapter and narrative should be taken as a response to those that surround it. My own voice, and the voice of this text are also a part of this process and it my hope that it can elicit a response that will help the people to whom I am so much indebted.
