The study examines the ways in which cyberspace functions as a rhetorical and cultural forum for North African and Arab women to assert their identity as lesbians. More directly, this project focuses on lesbian writing that considers the questions of survival and political change in North African and Arab cultures that condemn homosexuality. In particular, it is the writings of Al Kawthar to which I turn in an effort to examine lesbian narratives as communicative strategies of resistance.

Philosophically, voice is a universally shared capacity of human beings. Consequently, this project asks how are the voices of North African and Arab lesbians represented and deployed in their struggle against heteronormativity? I use a variety of theoretical tools: namely, postcolonial feminist theories, narrative theories, and poststructuralist theories of subject formation. Drawing from these diverse theories allows for new ways of critically examining and locating North African and Arab women's sexualities on a large intertextual and international grid where competing cultural, political and social codes are negotiated. Most importantly, the study points to how lesbian narrative strategies of appropriating folktales, performing autobiography and writing erotica enable political and cultural agency for North African and Arab women to participate in everyday cultural activities in support of their freedom.
