Thesis (M.S.)--The William Paterson University of New Jersey, 2011.
This study was designed to examine differences in the persuasive writing skills of language learning disabled (LLD) and typically developing (TD) college students. Elements of syntax, semantics, and morphology were also examined. Results of the persuasive writing task indicated that those with LLD produced shorter, less persuasive narratives and omitted more grammatical morphemes than their TD peers. The LLD students also manifested greater variability on measures of persuasiveness, productivity, and grammatical morpheme errors. However, patterns differed from previous research with respect to reasons given to support the main argument, counterarguments mentioned, counterargument rebuttals, lexical diversity, and percent correct usage of adverbial conjuncts. The results clearly suggest that for individuals with LLD, persuasive writing difficulties continue into the college years.
