The role of sound symbolism in phonesthesia in English and in ideophony in Yoruba and Korean is the main focus of the research and experiments. The first chapter presents a typology of iconicity in phonosemantics based upon observations made by Bellugi and Klima (1978) on iconicity in sign languages. Onomatopes evidence transparent iconicity. Sound symbolic words exhibit translucent iconicity. Phonesthemes and ideophones evidence opaque iconicity.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapters Two through Four examine issues of ideophony. Two psycholinguistic experiments using Yoruba ideophonic stimuli are described. In the first experiment non-Yoruba-speaking subjects correctly matched Yoruba ideophones (presented aurally) to English translations at statistically significant levels. In the second experiment similar subjects were not able to correctly assign semantic domains (represented as poles of semantic oppositions) to their respective Yoruba ideophonic word-sets (presented aurally). In an experiment using Korean ideophone pairs as stimuli, non-Korean-speaking (native and non-native English-speaking) subjects were able to match the specific meaning given of one member of aurally presented pairs to the correct ideophone at statistically significant levels.

The following three chapters examine phonesthesia in English. These include the results of a survey of native speaker judgements concerning the "relatedness" among words containing phonesthemes, a replication using non-native English-speaking subjects of Markel and Hamp's (1960-61) experiment on five initial consonant clusters with differing results, and experimental evidence using native Arabic and Japanese non-English-speaking subjects which suggests little role for universal sound symbolism in English phonesthesia. Thus, the experimental results of the dissertation support a psychological distinction between types of iconic sound-meaning correlations.

The last chapter is devoted to a formalism suitable for the representation of supralexical phonosemantic correlations within a grammar: Autolexical Semantics. The formalism is applied to example cases of ideophones in English, Korean, Yoruba, and Zulu.
