While research has been published on the popular music of American songwriter Cole Porter (1891-1964), little attention has been given to Porter's self-described "serious work," Within the Quota. Cole Porter's reputation as one of the best celebrated and most performed American composers of the twentieth century stems from his eclectic, sarcastic, witty and elegant melodies and text. Some theorists consider his music to be little more than elementary tunes, but the ballet, a work that was considered lost until its recovery shortly after his death, shows Porter as fully capable of complex 20th century compositional elements such as jazz and polytonality. Fusing these elements with his own style and method, Porter's Within the Quota is a work characteristic with predating works by Stravinsky, Gershwin, and Darius Milhaud. La Creation du monde, which premiered the same night as Within the Quota, is well regarded as an example of early 20th century music and serves as a template in contrast to Porter's attempt at "serious music." The purpose of this research project is the creation of an analysis of Cole Porter's Within The Quota with a comparison to existing analyses of Darius Milhaud's La Creation du monde. Analyses of La Creation du monde satisfied the comparison. Primary resource materials used for this project include the original piano manuscript for Within the Quota and the original chamber score for La Creation du monde. Considerations were given to extant versions of both ballets. In the case of Within the Quota, Charles Koechlin's orchestration was referenced, but not used as primary source material. Great care was taken to focus on the writing of Porter himself to insure analysis of the "original intent" of the composer.
