Language, far from being a static and homogenous entity, is constantly changing. These changes can be observed in situations of contact between languages and can happen in one (or more) of the linguistic systems that coexist. Also they are possible to be manifested during the process of a first language, second language acquisition (Romaine, 2003) or the acquisition of a second variety (Wadhaugh, 2006).

The main purpose of this study is to describe the linguistic and social variables that seem to contribute to the frequency of use of the progressive constructions among three groups of Spanish learners: native (NS) of Mexico, second language (L2) and heritage speakers (HS) of Houston. In addition, we try to provide some explanations to atypical students' productions in the light of existing differences between English and Spanish.

It is believed that aspectual meaning can best be explained by taking into account the lexico-semantic nature of the verb as specified by Vendler (1967). Such an approach shows that progressive' constructions in Spanish do not constitute simply stylistic variants as it has been suggested (Marchand, 1995; Garcia-Miguel, 2005). On the contrary, the progressive construction adds a semantic dimension not found in their simple counterparts. For instance, the progressive form in Te estoy esperando (I am waiting for you) has the meaning of "duration throughout"; where the simple form Te espero (I am waiting for you) Jacks this dimension of meaning. The description of the "interlingua" produced by this sample is based on written tasks and spontaneous oral production data. The general findings of this investigation suggest that there is a distinctive pattern of usage of the present progressive construction among the three groups.

In general, the progressive construction is preferred by the L2 learners. Although, as their level of proficiency in Spanish advances, their use of the progressive construction decreases, approaching the direction of native usage. Vie observed similar patterns among the heritage speakers of Spanish. Furthermore, the considered aspectual classes (states, activities, achievements and accomplishments) are partially sufficient to give account of the impact of the lexical verb in the election of the speaker.
