This study reinvestigates and extends theory developed by Manning (2006) regarding the types of narratives used by LGBTQ individuals in the act of coming out. Non-probability sampling produced 102 written narratives to an online survey investigating face-to-face and mediated coming out communications. Manning's original work identified seven distinct typologies, but questioned the inclusion of mediated communication. Manning's original protocol was modified to better investigate mediated communication as a typology. Results of the author's qualitative analysis show clear support for mediated communication as a narrative typology. Data was further analyzed using emotional coding to determine similarities or dissimilarities in the self-defined emotions of the narrator and narrative recipient. A grounded theory analytical process was used resulting in a new theory of sender-receiver shared emotional responses to the coming out communication.
