Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 1995.
This study is an exploration of help-seeking decisions made for mental and physical health problems as influenced by individual characteristics and situational factors. Forty-four male and 115 female university staff, 95 of whom were parents, were surveyed using the Little-Fisher Denial Scale, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales (LOC), and 12 health vignettes. Vignettes varied by type of health problem (mental versus physical), severity of symptoms (severe versus mild), and person affected (self versus child). The likelihood of seeking help from a variety of informal and formal sources was questioned. Results indicate that help-seeking from one source correlates with help-seeking from other sources. Professional help is sought more often for physical health than mental health problems. External LOC increases help-seeking from health professionals. Perceived severity of the problem, financial concerns, and coverage by insurance also influence help-seeking. Non-parents seek more help than parents. Overall, individual and situational factors influence help-seeking and lead to a delay or failure in seeking appropriate professional help.Subjects--Topical Terms:
