Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Pennsylvania State University, 1991.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between health behaviors, health locus of control beliefs, self-perceived well-being, and coping resources among adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) and non-ACOAs in a University population. Comparative procedures were conducted to assess any differences between the groups on the above mentioned variables. Subjects were 980 undergraduates enrolled in selected one-credit health education and physical education classes at 17 campuses of The Pennsylvania State University during the Spring Semester 1991. The subjects completed a 183-item questionnaire which included demographic information, questions pertaining to parental drinking behavior, the College Wellness Check (WS) (Dewey & Cabral, 1986), the General Well-Being Schedule (GWB) (U.S. Public Health Service, 1977), the Multi-Dimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC) (Wallston, Wallston, & DeVilles, 1978), and the Coping Resources Inventory (CRI) (Hammer & Marting, 1988). Of the 980 subjects who participated in the study, 143 (14.6%) were ACOAs, 56 (5.7%) were unsure of a parental drinking problem, 35 were ungrouped due to missing values, and 746 (76.1%) were non-ACOAs.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Bivariate coefficients obtained from the Pearson r procedure indicated that there was a significant relationship between health behaviors, self-perceived well-being, and coping resources for both ACOAs and non-ACOAs. No significant relationship was found however between health behaviors and health locus of control beliefs among ACOAs; a weak negative coefficient was found on the Chance scale for non-ACOAs. Analysis of variance procedures revealed that ACOAs had significantly lower Wellness Scores (WS), General Well-Being scores (GWB) and Coping Resources Inventory scores than non-ACOAs. No significant differences were found between ACOAs and non-ACOAs regarding their health locus of control beliefs. The mean scores for all three groups indicated internally directed beliefs. Chi-square analyses of the individual variables of the WS and GWB revealed that ACOAs and non-ACOAs were significantly different on 15 of 50 variables and 10 of 33 variables respectively. Based on the findings it was concluded that being raised in a home where alcohol was abused does not definitively predict or predispose individuals to pathology; health locus of control was not a powerful contributor to Wellness scores; self-perceived well-being and coping resources do contribute to an individuals Wellness scores.
520 $a The results provide valuable information regarding ACOAs in a nonclinical setting and contributes to our understanding of the influences related to their health risk behaviors.
