This collection of essays introduces a model where the faith consumers have in the future of the firm determines the real equilibrium outcome of the economy. The model is intended to explain some of the mysterious behavior noticed during the 2008 recession and to add to the existing literature regarding animal spirits, sunspots and news shocks. The model is then extended to a two-country framework, allowing an analysis of the effect of business confidence on trade. In the fourth chapter, the question of trade is taken up again, in an empirical study relating technological invention and trade. Patent counts measure the innovation within a country, and the relationship between that innovation and trading relations is explored.
