Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 1993.
This study approached the text of Shan-hai-ching with the goal of uncovering an underlying order through which particular perspectives governing its compilation are implicitly conveyed. Investigation of the three parts which constitute the book confirmed that they are indeed related through an inherent logic which informs its structure. In following this underlying order the multiple authors of this text intended to convey their conception of cosmological history, emphasizing the theme of a gradual weakening and final severance of what once was a close and harmonious relationship between the heavenly and terrestrial realms. This theme suggests that the heritage of the book's authors was a system of religious belief of high antiquity, even though it is generally speculated that they physically lived during the Warring States period. Its authors seem to have belonged to an intellectual tradition of the period which was not of major influence and possibly existed in seclusion, in the sense that it was not in active contact with the dominant schools of the Warring States period.Subjects--Topical Terms:
