Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 1990.
For decades, Indologists have examined ancient texts to determine what the religious concerns or beliefs of Indians both were and in some cases are today, instead of examining what both ancient and modern texts mean to Indians and how they relate to their concerns now. Anthropologists, conversely, have examined "religious behavior" often with little reference to Indian textual traditions, which in many cases do have a profound impact on Indians' present religious behavior. This dissertation combines textual studies, practical field research, and a historical approach in an in-depth analysis of a particular religious setting. Specifically, it examines the extent to which an ancient Sanskrit religious text is imbedded in a living religious tradition in a north Indian context and the effect of historical change on the role and interpretation of the text.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The textual subject is the ca. sixth century C. E. Devi-Mahatmya. It is the earliest "glorification," or mahatmya, of the Goddess, Devi, as the supreme deity in Sanskrit literature, and remains a text of great importance today. Vindhyavasini Devi, briefly referred to in the work, has an ancient and uninterrupted tradition of worship at Vindhyacal, a village located near Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. The Devi-Mahatmya has a profound impact on the ritual and religious activities of priests and patrons at Vindhyacal Temple, and its popularity is spreading among various peoples concomitantly with the rise of literacy and especially due to the advent of secular education of Sanskrit.

The first chapter describes Vindhyacal Temple and its history. The second examines the history, myth, and cult of Vindhyavasini Devi. The third centers upon the religious intermediaries who service her temple. Western and native scholarship and relevant field data reveaing the life of the Devi-Mahatmya today is presented next. The text's great variety in ritual applications, place in Hindu festivals, relationship with Vindhyacal patrons, and the impact of technology on its life are examined in the last chapter. Finally, I conclude with interpretations of the role the Devi-Mahatmya plays in the religious behavior of Vindhyacal devotees and the role Vindhyacal Temple plays in the life of the Devi-Mahatmya.
