Latinos are currently the largest minority group in the United States. They are also the fastest growing group in the country. However, their dismal record of success in American schools and the pervasive negative perception of this group in US society warrant a greater understanding of this group as the social well being of the nation may be tied to Latinos' positive integration into US society.

520 $a This dissertation studied digital stories as a way to learn about Latino immigrant families in the United States. It accomplished this through a three tier exploration of the creation of digital stories by immigrant Latino parents at the Parents, Children and Computers Project (PCCP). The three research foci included: (1) program and participants, (2) the process in creating digital stories and (3) the content of digital stories and ethnographic interviews.
520 $a This study was grounded in the tenets of sociocultural theory and qualitative research methods were used both for data collection and data analysis. The data was researched through the triangulation of primary and secondary data sources including digital stories, ethnographic interviews, background questionnaires, field notes, audio/video recording, emails, parent's work and assessment instruments. The data were subjected to descriptive and content analysis and used elements of both case and cross case studies.
520 $a This research suggests that digital stories are powerful research tools for investigating Latino immigrants and their families. Findings in the study included that the environment required for the successful creation of digital stories paralleled that required for effective family literacy programs serving Latino immigrant families (i.e. respect, appreciation and integration of participants' culture and cultural knowledge). A detailed account into the creation of digital stories and the evolution of Latino immigrant parents as authors was also rendered where parents focused on accurately portraying their stories and providing an esthetically appealing presentation. Lastly, an emic representation of the immigrant experience was given and education surfaced as a theme that cut across various issues of interest presented.
