Absent in the literature that studies the contributions of youth organizing to school reform is a more in-depth study of the process of youth organizing, how participation in youth organizing activities affects the youth involved and how they understand their contributions to schools reform efforts. Several studies in the field suggest that youth organizers who work to transform their schools have had important impacts on educational outcomes and policies and on the youth themselves. Although based on case studies, previous research has not given voice to the youth who invest years in their organizing activities. This study uses a qualitative case study approach in which the voices of youth organizers contribute to a deep contextual understanding of youth organizers and the activities they carry out.

This study is guided by one primary research question and four sub-questions. The primary research question is: What is the impact of youth organizing in actualizing school educational reform in an ethnically diverse K-12 urban school district as perceived by youth organizers and participating youth? The research question is examined through four sub-questions: (1) How do youth organizers understand the process of making change in their schools? (2) How do youth organizers use action research in their work to effect changes in their schools? (3) How do youth organizers see that they benefit from their participation in youth organizing activities? (4) How have youths' experiences in organizing for school reform changed their understanding of education?

The theoretical framework used in this study is drawn from the literature of community and youth organizing, critical pedagogy, social capital and educational reform. The detailed contextual analysis of this specific case of youth organizing contributes to document the strengths, weaknesses and limitations of youth organizers' efforts to reform the institutions that both dominate and shape their perspectives.
