Thesis (Ph.D.)--Bowling Green State University, 1995.
This study endeavors to explore the outcomes of interdisciplinary endeavor in the Humanities, specifically American Culture Studies, and how such outcomes can favorably impact the teaching of first year college composition. Bringing the insights of American Studies, cultural studies, and a range of radical pedagogies to bear on the history and contemporary practice of composition pedagogy, a new, globally aware, environmentally sensitive, radically democractic perspective emerges for teaching composition. Rooted in the philosophy of "liberatory education" espoused by Paulo Freire, the dissertation examines the author's past practice of making "Youth Culture" a topic of undergraduate seminars. Critiquing past practice toward the end of informing future praxis, the approach constructed here also endeavors to bring the American Culture Studies perspective from the institutional fringes to the curricular core using existing institutional structures and priorities.Subjects--Topical Terms:
