Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality found in live births. It results in mild to moderate mental retardation, as well an increased incidence of certain medical conditions such as congenital heart disease, hypothyroidism, gastrointestinal complications, and problems with vision and hearing. In addition, individuals with Down syndrome are at up to a 20-fold greater risk of developing leukemia than individuals in the general population. Previous work with a group of families of individuals with Down syndrome who have also had a diagnosis of leukemia suggested that the psychosocial support needs of these families are unique, and that services to fully address their needs may not exist. We conducted focus group-style interviews with members of these families to better understand their experiences and needs. We used the data gathered to make recommendations for the development of support systems designed specifically for these families.
