Thesis (M.A.)--University of Oregon, 2003.
The British song composer, Roger Quilter (1877--1953), is relatively unknown to many musicians, especially non-vocalists, even though he generated a considerably large song output of approximately 150 songs. His songs were popular and performed regularly during his time but fell out of fashion in the 1940's, and there has been little research about him or his compositional style and techniques since then.

Quilter broke out of the compositional mold of the Victorian drawing-room ballad and chose to set higher-quality texts, with careful attention to word stress and meaning. He used harmonic, voice-leading, and melodic techniques to enhance the mood and meaning of the poetry, techniques found at the surface level and at deeper levels, shown in this thesis through Schenkerian analysis. He wrote accompanimental parts that were more complex in rhythm and texture than the traditional repeated chord accompaniments of the Victorian era. His songs have a sense of forward motion that he achieves through propelling techniques that are illuminated in this thesis. Quilter's harmonic and text-painting techniques are illustrated in this thesis by in-depth analyses of selected solo vocal compositions from Seven Elizabethan Lyrics Op. 12, Four Songs Op. 14, and Five Shakespeare Songs Op.23.
