520 $a A Pedagogical Guide for the Jugendlieder of Alban Berg examines forty-six songs written for voice and piano between the years 1902-1908. They have only recently been published in two volumes by Universal Edition (1985).
520 $a Berg wrote a total of eighty-five songs for piano and voice of which only twelve were published during his lifetime. Due to their unavailability, Berg's remaining songs are unfamiliar to teachers and vocalists as to their appropriateness for use in song recital and as teaching pieces.
520 $a The pedagogical guide is divided into sections. The first section presents free and literal translations as well as International Phonetic Alphabet renderings of the forty-six poems. Included in this section are poets' dates and dates of the forty-six compositions. Additional sections included are Voice Type Best Suited, Range, Tessitura, Level of Difficulty, and German Musical Markings. Finally, the guide presents a discussion of vocal pedagogical concerns that should be useful in the teaching or the preparation of these songs for voice and piano.
520 $a This guide has been created for three reasons: (a) to call attention to the early Berg songs; (b) to be a useful tool in the teaching and study of this repertoire; (c) to help expand the standard vocal repertoire in breadth and scope.
