Asian American congregations, including Korean congregations, have more women than men, but the number of female leaders is considerably lower than that of men. Asian Americans in church and society suffer a disadvantage because of their minority status in the United States, but Asian American women suffer a double disadvantage because of their gender. Asian American women do not have opportunities to hold leadership positions in the church or the chance to develop pastoral leadership in their congregations. The focus of this study was to investigate the reason why many Korean American clergywomen do not develop pastoral leadership skills or hold positions of leadership in their congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Through a survey of Korean American clergywomen and a survey of lay leaders of local congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), this dissertation investigated the expectations of local congregations for the clergy in an effort to determine the gap between the leadership qualities and skills of Korean American clergywomen and the needs of Korean American congregations. The result was that there was no difference between the proportion of Korean American clergywomen and lay leaders of Korean American congregations who perceived a difference between the pastoral leadership style needs of Korean American congregations and the pastoral leadership styles of Korean American clergywomen in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The most popular reasons for Korean American clergywomen not to serve their respective ethnic congregations were no calling, discrimination based on gender and age, limited leadership opportunities and theological differences.
